As i take a break from the vertical garden and live it up in BA, Argentina, I can assure all those out there concerned about how the garden will survive that it is all under control. Dad, aka the architect, has installed a self timed watering system - so all is good.

A new approach to the seedlings ...
One of the ideas I came across while searching about my vertical garden was to grow the seedlings inside toilet rolls. Why? Why not! Reuse, reduce, recycle ... These would have gone to the recycle bin, but instead they are reused in the garden. Making them is simple, cut the roll in half, then at one add put four cuts so that you can fold them under. Fill with seed raising mix, add some seeds, pop into the little hot house (or cover with plastic), water, then wait for them to grow.
When you plant them, open the small flaps at the bottom and then surround with soil. Apparently the cardboard will degrade over time, so you don't disturb the root ball when planting out. Here are the first round of seeds done this way ...

The only other thing, keep the toilet rolls moist. Special thanks to mum and dad, Shaz and Meags for keeping me supplied with toilet rolls! Stay regular!

Making the bags ....
So, the bags are made from 90% blackout shade cloth in a range of different colors! Rough size estimates are in the pic below.

Once you've cut the triangle, you fold it so that you make a cone shape bag. Tuck the bottom corner in to stop the Dort falling out! Sow along the bottom and up the side then back down again. Pretty easy! Then I add an eyelet so that the bag can be hung on the frame.
